There was a man who was a beloved father who always had a smile
on his face.
He was devoted to his friends and family. He was a true blessing
to all of us.
His journey had to end, but his
memory will last forever.
# LIVE LIKE YOU WERE DYING
The Story Goes...
Founded in 1999 by Brian Smith, the SmittyGear team reminds you always have a passion for life and "live like you were dying".
So my brother Scott and I decided when dad had fallen sick that we were going to memorialize him with matching tattoos that he and I would have done together.
The old man was in the US Air Force, had been a site contractor his whole life, was a jack of all trades and a master of many.
I can remember rebuilding mini-bike motors, gear assemblies, Mazda RX-7’s, clutches; you name it. We had a book on “how to repair” things, we didn’t send it anywhere.
In addition, when we were younger he drove a 1956 Ford Van, a panel truck. His friends called him “Smitty”. A year passed after his death and we still hadn’t found the perfect fit for our “memory” tattoo.
Somewhere around that time I bought a fishing boat, a 26’ center console intrepid. I was on a mission to name the boat and came up with the design for the Smitty logo…it resembles a Ford oval, similar colors as well. 2:19 is Dad’s birthday, and “Live like you were dying” was a song that had come out by Tim McGraw right about the time he got sick.
In all this, while I was technically designing the boat logo, I really came up with the template for the tattoo’s; which Scott and I proudly wear on our
